Social Sciences
- Division of Politics and International Relations
- Division of Psychology
The Division of Psychology produces high quality research across the broad range of the discipline. Our work fits within two underlying themes: Health and Wellbeing and Cognition, Perception and Communication. Within these themes our research focuses on a range of topics from the impact of personal trauma on psychological wellbeing to theoretical work on human memory and perception. Emphasis on theoretically informed applied research means that our work addresses important social and economic issues such as problem gambling, rehabilitation of offenders, health in the workplace, and developmental disorders such as autism or dyslexia.

Cognition, Perception and Communication
- Cognition and Perception
- Language and Psycholinguistics
- Development, Interaction and Social Relations
Psychology research at NTU has been funded by prestigious funding bodies such as ESRC, EPSRC, Leverhulme and the EU framework programme, public bodies such as NHS and National Offender Management Service as well as by major charities and industry.
- Interlinked research
Research in the Divisions of Social Work and Professional Practice (SWaPP) and Sociology is increasingly interlinked. In 2008, the RAE adopted a social policy focus and the result showed that:
- 95% of NTU's research activity in social policy was at an international standard.
- 60% of research activity was either world-leading or internationally excellent.
- NTU's social policy submission was joint eighth in the country in a ranking of social policy departments by the sum of their world-leading and internationally excellent work.
Since 2008 research activity has developed around two key themes:
- Social inequalities and social interventions
- Crime and youth justice
Research groups are 'hosted' by the different Divisions but bring staff together in an interdisciplinary approach. Externally, research in this field is funded by such bodies as the ESRC, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, Home Office and other Government departments and national charities.
