Cognition, Perception and Communication
Cognition and Perception
Researchers in this group undertake theoretical and applied work on human cognition and perception processing ranging from short-term and long-term memory to auditory processing, the time course of visual perception and attention to multiple objects. Research by the group draws on dedicated Psychology research facilities and specialist resources such as eyetracking, EEG and the Computational Modelling and Data Analysis laboratory.
Work by the group has appeared in major international journals such as Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, International Journal of Audiology, Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Vision Research and Psychological Review.
Our work has been funded by ESRC, EPSRC and the Nuffield Foundation.

Language and Psycholinguistics
The Language and Psycholinguistics group conduct research ranging from language acquisition and development to mathematical modeling of psycholinguistic data. Our work examines both typical and atypical language and literacy development (particularly in the areas of specific language impairment, dyslexia, and autism). Researchers in the group also draw on specialist research laboratories including our eyetracking and Computational Modelling and Data Analysis facilities to investigate skilled performance in reading and writing. The group benefits from multiple cross-disciplinary collaborations linking with other members of the Division, other Departments, and national and international collaborators.
Work by the group has appeared in major international journals Developmental Science, Journal of Speech, Language, & Hearing Research, Memory & Cognition, Topics in Cognitive Science and Psychological Review.
The group has been supported by British Academy, Experimental Psychology Society and Leverhulme Trust.
Core staff: Gary Jones; Mark Andrews; Emily Coyne; Rebecca Larkin; Mark Torrance; Gareth Williams

Linked research units: Specific Language Impairment Research Unit (SLIRU)
Development, Interaction and Social Relations
Research in the Development, Interaction and Social Relations group addresses questions on learning and psychosocial development in key contexts such as schools, minority and vulnerable populations and virtual worlds. It considers the development and organisation of social interactions, relationships and influences in enhancing social adjustment and learning using multiple approaches, techniques and facilities. The group benefits from multiple cross-disciplinary collaborations linking with other members of the division, other departments and national and international collaborators.
The group has been funded by the British Academy, British Psychological Society, Becta, DES, ESRC and the EU.
Work by the group has appeared in major international journals such as Autism, Brain, Computers and Human Behavior, Early Childhood Research Quarterly, and the Journal of Personality & Social Psychology.
