Research strategy
Founding principles
Research that shapes lives and society is central to the mission of Nottingham Trent University and to the achievement of its aims. The University values what research is, what it does and those who undertake it - not only within our own academic community, but also through communications with the wider research community with which the University increasingly collaborates.
Research that is outward-looking and is characterised by its orientation to real-world influence enables the University to make a self-sustaining contribution to society, culture and the public interest. Therefore, the University needs an active research culture, in order to be a market leader in a knowledge-driven economy. The positive relationship between research and teaching is an essential part of this principle.
The aims of the strategy
The long-term aim of the University is to achieve sustainable growth both in the quality and volume of research. Therefore the University will:
- Maximise the impact of research on the University’s mission, reputation and teaching and learning strategy.
- Develop the University's research effort to optimise performance both within and outside the remit of continuing external review of research excellence.
- Identify areas for selective investment where we can be satisfied, on evidence, that growth is sustainable.
The University’s strategic platforms
We see research as an agent for beneficial change within the University that:
- Adds to the depth, breadth and diversity of our intellectual portfolio that informs undergraduate courses and drives new developments in postgraduate education, capable of attracting a diverse and expanding population of taught and research postgraduate students.
- Enhances the student environment outside and beyond the lecture hall.
- Accelerates the careers of an increasingly diverse body of postgraduate students, from the home, EU and overseas markets.
- Contributes to the University's capacity to invest and innovate, with properly managed research providing a stimulus for growth.
