The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is an exercise undertaken approximately every five to seven years on behalf of the four UK higher education funding councils (HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW, DELNI) to evaluate the quality of research undertaken by British higher education institutions.
RAE submissions from each subject area (or unit of assessment) are given a rank by a subject specialist peer review panel. The rankings are used to inform the allocation of quality weighted research funding each higher education institution receives from their national funding council.
The RAE2008 results for NTU showed that the quality of the University's research is outstanding, with 74% of activity submitted achieving international status and 8% classed as world-leading.
Professor Neil Gorman, Nottingham Trent University's Vice-Chancellor, said: "To have almost 75% of our research submitted achieving international status is a great achievement, and congratulations must go to all the University staff whose excellence and dedication led to such a strong performance.
"The breadth and depth of our research portfolio highlights how important it is to our culture. Research is an essential activity that underpins our learning and teaching here at the University and we are committed to encouraging it at all levels."
