Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences
We are situated on the Brackenhurst campus in Southwell, a historic market town some 14 miles from the centre of Nottingham. Our 200-hectare estate is used for teaching and research, as well as for commercial agriculture.
We have specialist units for veterinary nursing, animal science (welfare), environmental conservation, equine studies and food technology. Our campus has its own laboratories, IT and library suites as well as an animal care unit, equestrian centre and modern glasshouses. All students based at Brackenhurst also have access to facilities at the University’s Clifton and City campus sites.
We have a good record of applied research contacts with industry, government, charities and commercial bodies. We specialise particularly in:
- environmental management
- biodiversity conservation
- equestrian sports
- animal welfare
- animal nutrition
- food
- agriculture.
We have received funding from:
- Research Councils (BBSRC and EPSRC)
- Natural England
- The Environment Agency
- DEFRA
- The National Trust
- The People’s Trust for Endangered Species
- Severn Trent Water
- food companies
- animal feedstuff companies.
We have a regular research seminar programme. Four major themes are:
- Biodiversity Conservation
- Sedimentary Environments
- Animal Health and Welfare
- Equestrian Sports
In addition we are developing research that will support our Rural Knowledge and Enterprise initiative, including horticulture, sustainable waste management and food technology. Researchers are encouraged to develop interdisciplinary collaborations, both within our institution and beyond. Examples include links with specialists in sports science, psychology, archaeology, physics and biomedical science.
