Science and Technology
Research lies at the heart of our activities, providing international esteem and opportunities for commercial exploitation. We host wide-ranging research of international status in world class facilities.
Over the last five years we have made a concerted effort to increase the interdisciplinary nature of our research, bringing together fundamental and applied research to provide benefit to people and society. Our research is clustered in Research Groups and Centres, providing a focus for different themes with their underpinning platforms:
- Biomedical, Life and Health Sciences Research Centre
- John van Geest Cancer Research Centre
- Physical Sciences, Engineering and Computing Sciences Research Centre
The core activities in these centres were recognised as Internationally Excellent or World Leading in RAE2008. Unit 12 (Allied Health Professions and Studies) and Unit 25 (General Engineering) are among the top 15 of universities in the UK according to the Times Higher Education Supplement.
Our research is supported by external funding from a diverse range of sources including UK and international funding councils, charities and industry.
Our academic staff, together with over 50 postdoctoral fellows and over 100 research students, support a large Graduate School which provides opportunities for study on PhD, MPhil and Masters by research programmes in a stimulating and caring environment. Research underpins our courses at the BSc and MSc level by supporting taught modules and providing exciting research projects.
