Research training programme
Research students at NTU are encouraged to develop personally and professionally during their time at the University. While you are working on your research project you will develop skills which will help you throughout your time here and in your future career. Shortly after enrolment, and at the start of each academic year, your Supervisory Team will review with you your particular training needs.
Business, Law and Social Sciences
Support and training are provided to ensure that all students graduating with a research degree in Business, Law or Social Sciences at NTU are fully equipped with the generic, subject-specific and transferable skills needed to complete their degrees successfully, along with the know-how necessary for future success in a research-oriented career. Students are asked to take and pass a pre-agreed set of modules in research methods during Year One, and they also take the Programme of Supporting Studies over the course of the three year PhD programme - including fortnightly workshops, and a research student conference in May each year.
Arts, Humanities and Education
Art, Design and the Built Environment
Throughout your research project you will follow a programme of supportive training and development that includes research methods, ethics and codes of practice, communication tools, and other discipline-specific and generic skills. The Research Practice Course draws on modules run by experts from both Arts, Humanities and Education and Art and Design and the Built Environment, ensuring that you receive the best portfolio of training to meet the individual needs of you and your research project. The Research Practice Course is a postgraduate diploma level programme in research practice methodology which is unique among Universities in the UK.
Science and Technology
Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences
All Science and Technology, and Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences research students attend an induction session, a two and a half day Research Methods workshop, a Project Approval writing workshop and an Effective Researcher course in their first year of study. Subject-specific training is undertaken as advised by their supervisor. Generic skills training is provided throughout the research degree programme. Training on transfer report writing and PhD completion, including the viva process, is given in the second and third years respectively. Students are expected to attend School Research Seminars and Conferences and present their work at these events.
