The Biosciences team offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses and innovative research broadly based across the biological sciences. The team look at aspects of biochemistry, biomedical sciences, environmental biology, microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology and plant sciences.

Our Biomedical Science provision at both undergraduate and postgraduate level is accredited by The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

Research

The team was awarded a Grade 5 for Other Subjects Allied to Medicine (RAE 2001) and this quality was reconfirmed in RAE 2008 with 90% internationally recognised, including 20% of research classed as world-leading. This research is conducted to the highest quality, of both an applied or fundamental nature, in areas of strategic importance in the biomedical, biological and environmental sciences, using a multidisciplinary approach and state-of-the-art analytical, molecular and cell culture facilities. The diverse nature of the research topics lends itself to interdisciplinary approaches which encourage collaboration of an internal, national and international nature. Visit our research pages to find out more.

Facilities

Our well-equipped teaching labs support the practical nature of our courses, as well as modern research facilities including:

  • the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Centre
  • the Anthony Nolan Tissue Bank
  • a large bioscience lab within the new National Science Research Centre
  • the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre.

Industry links

We have forged extensive collaborations with a wide range of public sector, industrial and government-based partners. This provides the necessary currency to our research and teaching and offers useful links for placement opportunities for students during their study or following graduation. We work with the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, Institute of Biomedical Science, Health Professions Council, East Midlands Strategic Health Authority and Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.
