Research
The computing team maintains a highly active research profile. Our research quality was confirmed in RAE 2008 with over 90% internationally recognised, including 9% of research classed as world-leading (UoA 23 and UoA 25). Research is usually, but not exclusively, clustered around common interest groups including: Applied Imaging and Displays, Communication Systems, Intelligent Recognition, Intelligent Simulation and Modelling, Interactive Systems and Serious Games, Communications and Security and Centre for Innovation and Technology Exploitation. Many final year students engage directly with our research through their final year projects and many modules benefit from the knowledge gained through our research. Visit our research pages to find out more.
Facilities
We have over ten undergraduate teaching laboratories, with over 300 workstations running Windows and Linux. We have specialist facilities including games console labs, networking and security labs and a Human-Interactive technology lab which includes stereo-projection, as well as a dedicated final year project lab. Specialist software includes EnCase, 3D StudioMax, XNA Xbox development suite, The Adobe Creative Suite (Flash, After Effects, Photoshop) and the Unreal and Half-life Games Engines.
Industry links
We believe passionately that the strength and relevance of our teaching and research provision is underpinned through a healthy synergy with a network of external businesses, agencies and organisations. We have over 260 regular industrial partners for work placements, including Microsoft, ARM, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, HP, Xerox, Siemens and Experian. NTU is home to the internationally renowned GameCity Festival. Consequently our students benefit from a unique opportunity to be involved in placements, demonstrations and conference events.
