BSc (Hons) Physics - Imaging individual atoms - Mark Tillman
Scanning tunnelling microscope image
For his final year project, Mark Tillman used a state-of-the art scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) to image individual atoms. He created a sharp stylus which the microscope then scanned across the surface measuring any bumps and dips, much like the needle of a record player. The data is converted into a colourful map measuring 2nm across, in which the white regions represent individual carbon atoms.
