How many lectures will I have each week?

That depends on your course. You will receive a timetable at the beginning of term which will show the lectures, seminars and tutorials, all of which you are expected to attend.

How much work do I have to do outside lectures?

Lectures provide the guide to the subject area you are studying. You will be expected to read and research extensively around the various topics covered in lectures and seminars. For a full-time undergraduate degree course you should expect to spend 35-40 hours each week of term time either in lectures or in independent study. There may be times during the term, when assignments are due for example, when you find that you are spending more time than usual in study.

Can I work and study?

Many of our undergraduate students on full-time courses do have part-time jobs. The University and local employers offer part time work which fits in with your studies. We suggest that students should not work more than 10 hours a week and must ensure that their work commitments do not impinge on their studies.

My course offers a work placement – do I have to find this myself?

If you are on a vocational course such as Social Work your placements are found for you. On other courses where placements are optional we can provide support to help you find a work placement.
