Emergency Services Conference
Emergency Management: Themes in Emergency Planning, Response and Recovery
Tuesday 13 November 2012
Nottingham Conference Centre, Nottingham Trent University, UK
This is the inaugural conference for a new annual conference and networking event. The intention is to bring together academics and practitioners to learn about latest developments, share research and information and to allow the development of opportunities for promoting and initiating future research in the emergency services and emergency management. The conference presentations will be peer reviewed and include both oral and poster presentations.
As well as opportunities to share information and network across the broad spectrum of emergency management, the conference is intended to provide a forum for supporting and encouraging both experienced and early career researchers, as well as practitioners involved in practice-focussed research. Non-presenting delegates are also welcome and it is hoped that this audience will include not only academics but also those who work full or part-time within the emergency services, emergency planning, disaster management and allied professions.
A number of research prizes are associated with this event with the International Journal of Emergency Services offering a prize for the best oral presentation and the Emergency Services Research Unit at NTU offering a prize for the best student poster. The Emergency Planning Society Education Committee will also be giving a prize for the best oral presentation by a student.
The conference organising committee is led by staff within the Emergency Services Research Unit (ESRU) and also includes external practitioners working in the field.
Call for papers
Emergency planning, response and recovery activities are as important as ever in today's world. Although our understanding of risk and crises is increasing, individuals and communities continue to be exposed to the threat and impacts of major emergencies and disasters.
This event, supported by the Emergency Services Research Unit (ESRU) at Nottingham Trent University and the International Journal of Emergency Services , seeks to increase our theoretical and empirical understanding of emergencies and their management. The conference aims to achieve this through the presentation and discussion of contemporary research projects focussing on this field. It also aims to highlight the implications of study findings for future policy and practice. Further, it intends to provide a supportive environment for discussing research processes and findings, (including work in progress) and publishing opportunities for those who may be new researchers in the field (including postgraduates on masters and doctoral programmes).
The call for papers is deliberately wide and aims to appeal to researchers and practitioners engaged across the broad spectrum of emergency management activities. This includes academics, members of the emergency services, emergency planners and disaster managers, risk managers, those working in community safety and recovery, and members of those organisations which conduct research, supply and work with these professionals.
Proposals are now invited for 20-minute presentations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- emergency planning and civil protection
- major incident response and crisis management
- risk management, including risk communication, warning and informing
- business continuity planning and disaster recovery
- community resilience, including community engagement and recovery activities
- case studies, particular incidents and lesson identified
- emerging trends and issues in emergency response and disaster management
- emergency service issues (both general or service specific).
Please download the full call for papers document and application form .
As many submissions as possible will be included in the conference programme. Poster presentations are also welcome and your reference should be indicated on the application. If there is considerable interest in submitting papers, it may be necessary to make a selection of speakers and to offer space in the poster session to anyone not offered a speaking slot.
Closing date for submissions: Friday 18 May 2012. Your completed form should be returned by the closing date to Dr Jeff Goatcher.
All enquiries about the conference should be directed to Rowena Hill or Viv Brunsden.
