10.45 am - Keynote address by Professor Di Bailey, Nottingham Trent University

Di Bailey is a Professor of Mental Health with a background in psychology and social work. She is Head of the Division of Social Work and Professional Practice and Research Director for the School of Social Sciences at NTU. Di has 23 years of practice and research experience in the field of mental health with particular interests in interdisciplinary working and service user involvement in the delivery of mental health services. Latterly, Di’s research interests have focused upon difficult to engage groups including individuals with interrelated mental health and substance misuse or offending needs. Di’s latest research project has focused upon women in custody who self-harm which has testified to the importance of relational security for women offenders’ health and wellbeing. Di will present the issues arising from this research related to the topic of ‘Thinking taboo: lesbian and gay relationships in the prison system, issues for practice and research.’

11.15 am - Guest Presentation – Mr David Edgley from Nottinghamshire’s Rainbow Heritage, LGBT History Project.

"It’s History, Jim, but not as we know it" – a hop, skip and jump through Nottinghamshire’s Rainbow Heritage.

Nottingham Rainbow Heritage is an LGBT history project which received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2008. It is run by local volunteers who collect, preserve and celebrate Nottingham Lesbian , Gay, Bisexual and Transgender lives, hidden history and culture.

This interactive presentation will look at the importance, curious and the ridiculous turning points in the LGBT history since the 14th Century. The presentation will focus on events of both national and local significance and from time to time pinpoint Nottinghamshire as the centre of the LGBT universe.

David Edgley is the project manager of Nottinghamshire’s Rainbow Heritage and has had considerable experience in providing training on lesbian, gay and bisexual and transgender issues for a variety of organisations, including Nottingham Trent University’s Department of Social Work.
