Centre for Study and Reduction of Hate Crimes, Bias and Prejudice

The centre has undertaken research funded by the Home Office and the Department for Communities and Local Government to identify good practice in the use of the media to reduce prejudice. This peer reviewed Government policy report is entitled, Getting the Message Across: Using the Media to Reduce Racial Prejudice. The authors of this paper are Dr Mike Sutton (NTU), Professor Barbara Perry (NTU Visiting Professor) Jonathan Parke (Salford University) and Catherine John Baptiste (NTU).

In addition, the following projects have recently been funded by the centre:

  • The management of black and Asian identities in Nottingham Constabulary (with visiting Professor Barbara Perry and Catherine John-Baptiste of NTU)
  • Hate crimes, bias and prejudice aimed at those in intimate black and white interracial relationships in the UK and USA (with visiting Professor Barbara Perry)
  • Exploring issues of agency and exploitation in the Thai and western male mail order marriage market (With Dr Judith Rowbotham of NTU)
  • Being out on the streets: Risk perceptions and encounters with violence among gays and lesbians in Nottingham (With Dr Kira Kosnick and Darren Sharpe NTU).
