Adam Dixon (hockey)
My name is Adam Dixon, and I play Hockey for England, and am hopeful for selection for Team GB in the London 2012 Olympics. I'll be working towards the Olympics in May.
Name: Adam Dixon
Sport: Hockey
Position: Midfield
Course: Property Management and Development
History
I started playing hockey competitively at the age of six. As soon as I could walk, my parents got me into the sport. My first major stepping stone was playing for Nottinghamshire U14's aged just 8 years old - a pretty daunting experience. Since then I progressed through the age groups becoming England U16, U18 and U21 captain and eventually making my senior international debut in 2009 against reigning Olympic champions Germany. My senior career to date has included one World Cup, two European Cups, two Champions Trophys & one Commonwealth Games.
Goals
My first Olympic goal is to be picked for the 16 man squad that will compete and from there, go on to win a medal.
Interesting Fact
I hold the record for the youngest player to represent their county (played U14 aged 8 years old).
My Typical week
Currently training 12-13 times per week across pitch, weight room and running based sessions. An average day would be waking up between 6.30 am - 8.00 am and either driving down to Marlow, Bucks for team training or Loughborough for weight room session. As a team we train three days a week for two 2-hour sessions and in between check our personal video clips, have some physio treatment or relax and unwind. We have a small East Midlands based training group that push each other in the weight room. Our programme mainly consists of back squats, cleans and supplementary core exercises.
Milestones
Main milestones this year are the Champions Trophy, to be held in New Zealand, December. This is the last major competition before the Olympics and is a good indicator as to how the Olympics might pan out. We will be looking to come home with a medal.
What does being a Student-Athlete at NTU mean to you?
Being an athlete during your time at university obviously has its setbacks. I cannot live the typical student life and have to take care with what I eat and drink which many of my friends at the same stage do not have to think about.
