The charities
The Varsity series has been contested for several years and is always played in good spirit with a friendly rivalry both on and off the pitch. It is only in recent years that the series has had the added incentive of being a charity-focused event.
The totals raised for the chosen charity has risen every year, and in 2010, Cardiac Risk in the Young received more than £14,500. This was topped by the 2011 total of over £16,000 for the Parents Association for Seriously ill Children.
This year's chosen charity is Headway, set up to give help and support to people affected by brain injury. All funds will contribute towards:
- increasing awareness of brain injury
- adverts and campaigns
- information and support to people with brain injury and their family
- brain injury screening
- accommodation and care
- the establishment of more Headway groups in the UK
Michael Thomas, Headway: "Being nominated and awarded the honour of the named Charity for the Varsity Series is a huge deal for us. Brain injury is often referred to as " the Hidden Disability " due to the huge spectrum of issues that may not always be apparent through moderate or severe physical disability and often this results in those who are affected by Brain Injury to be stigmatised, marginalised and isolated within their communities. For us it is especially important to be nominated for the awareness of Brain Injury in Nottinghamshire. The most at risk group in Brain Injury terms is in the 15-29 age bracket, particularly young men so it is of particular relevance that being nominated allows us the opportunity to make more students aware of the issues around Brain Injury and its effects. We are hugely excited about the Varsity series and are extremely grateful to all of you for getting behind both Universities, the teams and the Organising Committee and of course ourselves."
