American footballThe Nottingham Trent Renegades American football team competes annually in the British Universities American Football League (BUAFL), which is the largest competition for American Football in Europe. The season runs from November to April.
Last year's 2011/12 season was arguably the most exciting yet. An opening fixture away to Champions the Birmingham Lions in a game filmed and commentated by Sky Sports set the foundations for another successful year. After completing the hat-trick in the fiercely contested Charity Varsity Series game against the University of Nottingham Outlaws, The Renegades once again lost out in the semi-finals of the Plate to the Bath Killer Bees.
2010/11 highlights included a 2nd victory for the Renegades in the Varsity fixture. Also for the 2nd year the Renegades made the post-season advancing all the way to the BUAFL Plate semi-finals losing to eventual winners the University of Cardiff Cobras in a hotly contested game.
2009/10 was the first season that we played as a single institution team, which was a great success as we finished with seven wins and only one overtime loss in the regular season, earning us a playoff spot! Also the team won their first Varsity Series victory over the University of Nottingham. 2010 was the first year that American football has been included in the series.
Our team caters for all abilities and we are looking to recruit heavily for the coming season and build on the success of recent seasons. An American football team is made up of many positions and requires a range of player builds and skill sets to succeed. The club will provide all the equipment you need and our experienced coaches will teach you everything you need to know to improve your skills. Whether you are a complete begginer or experienced veteran you are always welcome to come and enjoy the game. Any shape, any size there is always a position for you. Prove yourself as a Renegade to gain recognition from the city's senior side and have a chance to represent Great Britain.
In addition to on-field activities, the club has an active social scene with:
Regular Wednesday night socials, which include other sports club members National Football League games on Sunday nights.
Attended Saloufest and Rimini as part of the University annual Sports Tour.

BasketballNottingham Trent University’s basketball club caters to various competition levels across both women’s and men’s teams. We are a student run club who answers directly to the needs and wishes of basketball players, from beginners to national league, directly through student run committees.
In the upcoming year there will be two men’s team participating in organised league structures. The Men’s 1st team will be participating in the inter-university based BUCS league as well as the BUCS Cup and the Sherwood League Cup to supplement regular league games. The Men’s 2nd team will be participating in the Nottingham and Derbyshire based Sherwood League alongside other men’s teams from the counties. This is an addition to previous years and provides extra opportunities to players to train, practice and aim for a first team place throughout the year.
The Women’s 1st team have come fresh off a successful season in BUCS Midlands 1A, achieving promotion to the highest league in BUCS women’s basketball. After several key contributions from beginners to the sport in the last season, the women’s team are looking to expand their squad to help push them in premier league basketball.
On top of team structures the club is co-operating with Nottingham’s Basketball Development Officer to provide extra coaching opportunities to those who may be new to the sport or have spent time away from it. We also have regular turn-up-and-play sessions on weekends in an open-run style for those who just want to play basketball in a more relaxed manner.
Both Men’s and Women’s 1st teams participate in Varsity, the most important games of the year on our calendar. Last year saw some 400 people present as well as television and radio coverage, DJs, dance teams and post-Varsity celebrations. It is an honour to be part of a Varsity squad and is extended to 12 players on each team every year.
Off the court we participate in the almost famous weekly sports socials to which anybody, regardless of being a member of a team, are welcome to join. We also run charity events and alternative socials throughout the year as a chance to meet new people and socialise with other basketball players.

Belly dancing
Ever wanted to shake it like Shakira, or dance like Didem? Then belly dance is definitely the sports club for you!
Belly dance is a fun, sensual and exotic style of dance, originating from the Middle East. Thanks to celebrities like Rihanna, Beyoncé and Catherine Zeta Jones taking it up, it's become popular as an exciting and effective new way to work out! Since it's a low- to no-impact sport it's easy to join in with, and tones up a wide range of muscles, including the abs, thighs, glutes, calves and back.
On top of the two classes we have every week, we also hold unique one-off sessions to keep things interesting. From scarf dancing tutorials to beach body workshops, we do our best to make sure there's something for everyone.
Who doesn't love a good social? As well as packing some serious Wednesday night Ocean devotion, we'll be chatting over dinner formals, watching live belly dance performances, holding Arabic-themed make-up nights and a load more besides. The only thing we don't do is boredom!
Excited? We definitely are! So come along, learn the moves and shimmy your way through the routines as we get you ready for our spectacular end-of-term performances in style!
If you have any further questions about our Belly Dance Club, please do not hesitate to email the NTU Belly Dance Club or get in touch via our Facebook page, Twitter, or check out our website

Although we are an individualists sport, we still have a great team atmosphere; this is achieved not only through our challenging training sessions, but also on our Wednesday night social get togethers. FutsalFutsal is a form of five-a-side football that is played extensively throughout the world. FIFA chose the name 'Futsal' when it took over as the governing body of the sport in 1989. The term Futsal is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "football", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for "indoor", SALon or SALa.
The game is played on a court, with touchline boundaries, ranging in size from that of a standard basketball court to the full FIFA International size of 42 M x 25 M. The official ball is a special low bounce ball that is heavier and smaller than an official football. The ball forces a player to use their skill rather than the ball’s bounce to propel it.With smaller teams than regular football, players are constantly placed in situations where they must receive or play whilst under pressure or in confined spaces. Futsal revolves around technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness. Try this exciting sport today!

KarateKarate is a traditional and effective martial arts from Japan, ideal for developing fitness and discipline. The style we have adopted is Wado Ryu, which is based on small circle movements attributed to its origins in Ju jitsu. Wado Ryu uses shorter stances suited to a close-up fighting style designed for causing effective close range blows, locks, nerve strikes and takedowns.
There is no better way of conditioning your body and mind than a martial art. At NTU Karate, we aim to provide something for all, from disciplined hard training to cardio-fitness. We achieve this by combining traditional Japanese training methods with more contemporary ones.
Karate is a way of achieving peace and harmony in your day-to-day life, and is great for building core strength and stability.
A typical session consists of a warm-up and stretch followed by some hard conditioning on the core area. We then move on to looking at basic technique and making sure everyone is on the right path to maximising potential. We then test out our strength, stamina and accuracy on the pads before cooling down.
Classes are taught by:
Northern Bunkai Chief Instructor Sensei Tony Baker
- Ninth Dan Wado Ryu
- Eighth Dan Ju jitsu
- Fifth Dan Atemi Jitsu
- First Dan Kabudo
Sensei Julie Baker,
- Third Dan Wado Ryu
- Third Dan Ju Jitsu
These are some really amazing instructors, and everybody is welcome, so come on down and be a part of it! The first sessions are always free, and all you need is an NTU sport and fitness membership!
Please be aware, this is Karate and not knitting so be aware that although all control is taken to avoid injury, this is a contact sport. Although, those who want to can train with a minimum amount of contact.
We train on a Saturday 4.30pm - 6.00pm at the 02 Max on City Campus, See you there!

Rugby LeagueTrent Rugby League (TRL) has established itself as one of the top clubs at NTU. Since our formation in 1992 we have had numerous players move onto representative honours such as Midlands Students, England Students, Ireland Students, Scotland Students, Great Britain Pioneers and also Great Britain Students. We are a club that pride ourselves on a professional attitude on the pitch and in the gym. We always train as a team and welcome anyone who has a passion for the sport, no matter what their ability or background is.
We run two teams at NTU and next year are looking to field a competitive third team. The club's first team made it to the Quarter Finals of the National Championships this year and compete weekly in the National South Division, finishing 3rd and unlucky to not gain promotion to the Super 8. Next season they will enter the competition as hot favourites to gain promotion into the very highest level of student rugby league in the country. The second team this year has seen unrivalled levels of competition for places in their Midlands ‘A’ division campaign and won this year’s varsity with a record 32-0 victory against their fierce rivals University of Nottingham.
We also run an elite Rugby League Player Performance (RLPP) programme at the club that invites those players who show exceptional dedication and gives them the opportunity to take part in training sessions with professionals and ex-internationals. RLPP invitees also benefit from customised nutritional and training programme’s in the High Performance Centre at Clifton Campus.
Aside from the playing field we also enjoy the most welcoming and unique social scene at Trent. We work very hard to ensure that our club members get the most from their university experience as an NTU Rugby League member and are confident you will develop the same level of passion for our club very quickly. Don’t hesitate to take part in this fast, exciting and spectacular sport played by highly skilled and powerful athletes. We guarantee you will make some of your best memories at university with our club and friendships that will last you for many years to come.
“I’m 46 and I’ve had a triple heart bypass surgery but I could still put in a pretty good performance at International Rugby Union. I wouldn’t last two minutes in Rugby League” – Graeme Lowe, Zealand Rugby Coach 1995

With the club you will not only dive at some of the best sites around the UK, but you will be able to gain internationally recognised scuba diving qualifications as you do so, enabling you to dive almost anywhere in the world. The training is delivered by qualified British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) instructors, who are also ex NTU students ensuring they know how to have fun in and out of the water.

SwimmingNTU Swimming and Water Polo is a newly established club. We have added the Water Polo element to the Sports Club, which we hope will attract some new participants to the teams.
We've had swimming successes at various competitions such as BUCS and Team Champs, competing around the country to represent NTU. Alongside the competing, we also cater for those who would like to swim socially or for general fitness. We will have something for you no matter what your ability is. We do our best to merge the two sides together, encouraging those social swimmers to come along and support the competing team as much as possible.
The mood within the team is a fun and relaxed one and our members get on well together at all sessions and competitions. As well as catering for swimmers who compete, we pride ourselves on making sure everyone who wants to swim, no matter what level, can swim and enjoy themselves!
The establishment of our new water polo team means we have greater prospects of hosting and participating in many games over the coming years. If our first year as a water polo team is a success, we hope to enter the team into the BUCS league come 2013/2014 which entails regular fixtures for everyone involved.
Subscription to the club for the year is £10. If you were to attend every session over the year, it would equate to 13p per session! Bargain!
The swimming teams also have a strong link with a local club training at a local leisure centre in between the city centre and Clifton campus. If continuing to compete is your objective, we will help you towards this goal.
If swimming or Water Polo are your sports, or you want to try something new, NTU Swimming and Water Polo will keep you interested and enable you to meet some great people over the course of the year. Some quotes from Freshers this year include:
- "Not only does NTU Swimming and Water Polo offer me the opportunity to continue with I sport I've participated in and enjoyed all my life, it helps with my fitness."
- "I love the competitiveness I get from competitions we enter and the pride I've developed for NTU, especially being part of the varsity series."
- "The social benefit gains from being part of the closest knit sports team are countless and has increased the enjoyment of my university life"
Make your university experience a great one by joining NTU Swimming and Water Polo this year.

Table tennisNottingham Trent Table Tennis (TTT) is one of the youngest clubs at the University but that doesn't stop us from striving to constantly do our best. We have already grown exponentially and are expecting the club to become one of, if not the most popular at NTU with a massive variety of people and skills.
The club is planning to enter two teams in the British University and College Sport (BUCS) which any member of the club can compete in. Both the Men's and Women's teams will be competing against other universities alongside the University's team.
Our current training days have been split into two - with Wednesdays being for competition training and Fridays saved for recreational playing. So whether you want to help us compete against other universities and colleges or just play the game for fun, the club can sort that out for you. At the moment our coach takes the time to individually assist anyone that needs or asks for it and is more than happy to offer one-to-one sessions.
Joining the club will give you not only a lot of fun times but also will allow you to socialise and meet new people in different years of the University. Our Wednesday socials will help you meet members of other clubs and give you some of the best nights of your life. You will be part of a team and be able to wear our colours proudly.

Taekwondo WTFTaekwondo is a great way to increase your fitness, make new friends and try something completely different. We compete in numerous competitions throughout the year, host several gradings per year with the aim of getting our students to black-belt by the time they graduate.
We also go out on regular socials (drinking and non-drinking). We train in the Lee Westwood Sports Centre on Clifton campus. The club is coached by 4th Dan Nicola Ferguson, who has competed nationally and internationally and spent several years training with the national team. The club is also supported by 7th Dan BTCB Technical Director, Master Ian Lennox, who has held many national titles in all areas of Taekwondo and will visit us throughout the year.
There are three main areas of WTF Taekwondo. You can be involved in all, or specialise in the one you prefer.
- Poomsae (patterns) is the traditional and technical side of the martial art which uses the basic techniques of blocking, striking and kicking.
- Sports fighting is full contact and so is done wearing full protective gear whilst competitors attempt to score points or knock each other out by punching to the body or kicking the body or head (since the sports is based around kicking techniques). you may have seen this side of the sports in the 2012 olympics, during which Great Britain won a gold and a bronze medal.
- Self-defence will teach you how to defend yourself on the street, including defence against knives and batons.
In the first 3 years of the club many of our members won medals in competitions held across the country, including beginners. We currently have several national champions in poomsae from both British and Scottish national championships. Also this past year (the 3rd year of the club) we have had our first students’ progress to black-belt after starting out as a white belt with the club. Your first session is completely free, so come and see if it's right for you.

Recent destinations the club have been on include The Lake District, The Peak District, Wales and even the Alps. We also run a range of socials to suit everyone from drinks at the pub, clubbing, ice skating, ghost walks, cinema trips and much more so everyone can get involved.

Women's Rugby Union
Women’s rugby welcome any ability whether you have no experience of rugby or play at a high level. Women's rugby is a growing sport, which is becoming ever more popular at university level because girls want to try something new. Many members of the squad joined in their first year with no experience of rugby, and now have developed into confident and experienced players. Some have gone on to represent NLD (Notts, Lincs and Derbyshire) at County, Midlands East at Regional.
We play, party and have fun as a team! We have a social club members for those who take an interest in Rugby, but don't want to play and they are just as much a part of the club as the players.
It is guaranteed that you will make many friends by joining Women's Rugby, within the team and on our joint socials. We have many exciting events over the year:
