Deposits, accommodation fees and contracts

Deposits

In order to secure an accommodation booking, you will need to pay a £200 non-refundable booking fee. On moving into your residence this two hundred pounds then becomes your accommodation deposit, which is refunded at the end of your residential agreement subject to any deductions.

Please be aware that the £200 non-refundable booking fee is payable at the time of booking your accommodation. If this fee is not paid, your accommodation booking will be automatically cancelled.

Although our booking fee is non-refundable, if you are holding a conditional offer at the time of booking and do not attain the necessary grades to take up this offer, your accommodation booking will be cancelled and a full refund of your booking fee will be made. In most cases the accommodation booking fee is non-refundable. Should you re-apply to NTU through Clearing, you will also need to re-apply for accommodation.

If you do not meet the conditions of your offer, but are offered an alternative course, you must let Student Accommodation Services know immediately, otherwise you could lose the accommodation you are holding.

Accommodation fees

By booking your residences with us, your accommodation fees cover your rent and utility bills (gas, water and electricity). In some residences your fee includes basic contents insurance cover. An internet connection fee is payable for some residences.

Payment methods

  • Booking fee/deposit - this has to be paid at the time of booking using any major credit or debit card.
  • Accommodation fees - payment can be made either in full or in three termly instalments. Should you choose to pay in full, the money will be deducted immediately. The most popular payment method, however, is to pay by instalments on 8 October 2012, 10 January 2013 and 11 April 2013. Accommodation fee payments can be made by direct debit (UK bank accounts only) or by using any major credit or debit card.

International students who are unable to use the above payment methods are required to pre-pay the first instalment by bank transfer at the time of booking. If you are paying by bank transfer it is essential that you notify the accommodation office immediately by email.

All University booking fees/deposits will be processed on receipt with no interest payable.

All of our accommodation provides self-catering facilities. Our catering outlets, Taste, provide a wide range of snacks and meals, with pre-paid deals available offering great value. Visit the Taste website for more information.

Contracts

Entering into any legally binding contract shouldn't be taken lightly and your accommodation contract is no different. Signing a contract for a fixed period means that you must adhere to the terms and conditions and pay the rent for the entire duration of the agreement. It is therefore essential that you have read and fully understood the following contractual documents, in particular the University's Cancellation Policy:

Cancellation Policy
Entering into any legally binding contract shouldn't be taken lightly and your accommodation contract is no different. It is important that you fully understand the implications of accepting an agreement with us.

By making an accommodation booking and accepting the terms and conditions you are entering into a legally binding agreement and you will be liable for payment of the specified rent for the full term of the licence. However, the University will permit you to cancel your accommodation agreement without being liable for the payment of rent, provided that you adhere to both of the following:

  • You do not take up the study place offered at NTU.
  • You notify Student Accommodation Services directly, by email, no later than 21 days prior to the commencement of your accommodation agreement that you will not be studying at NTU.

After the specified deadline this no-penalty cancellation option will not be available and you will be legally bound by the terms and conditions of your accommodation agreement.

Please be aware that once you have accepted and completed your accommodation booking you will be held liable for the rent for the full duration of the contract period (44, 48 or 51 weeks depending on residence). Even if you leave accommodation or indeed the University early, you will remain liable for the rent unless you find a suitable student replacement for your room.

Think carefully about whether student communal living is for you before accepting the terms and conditions. Bear in mind that University accommodation is likely to be noisier than home.

If you have any doubts, please contact Student Accommodation Services who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
