What to expect

Undergraduate course inductions normally take place during Welcome Week each year; this means that you have a week to orientate yourself to the campus and the course before the returning students come back. Postgraduate inductions may be slightly earlier, but your course will always tell you when.

What happens during the course induction?

This varies a lot depending on the nature of the course, but there are some common threads:

  • You are likely to have a few introductory lectures in which key staff from your course will introduce themselves. They will try to explain a little about the essence of studying your subject in higher education.
  • It's worth noting that University study is often very different to your previous education and during the week your course staff will start to explain some of the differences.
  • Guest speakers will often talk to new students about services and opportunities available to you. Speakers often include Student support Services, the Students' Union, the library and volunteering teams.
  • Many courses will create opportunities for you to start to meet your fellow students, for example organising ice breakers, small group work and social events. You may have campus tours and visits to the library.
  • There will often be a number of administrative functions to carry out, such as choosing modules or picking up lab coats.
  • Finally, you are likely to be introduced to NOW, a virtual learning environment that contains all manner of vital resources such as timetables, email, course documents etc.

Find out about your course induction

Course induction information for courses starting in January 2013 will be available here from Friday 30 November. You may also be sent information by post or email, so make sure your details are up-to-date with UCAS and / or NTU or you might miss out.

Attending your course induction is extremely important. Taking part will help you understand how you are expected to study, help you focus on what's interesting about your subject and give you opportunities to start to make great friends. If you are unable to attend, make sure that you contact your School.
