Healthcare

The UK National Health Service (NHS) provides treatment through a range of health care services. Some services are free and some charge a fee.

The first thing you need to do is find out if you are eligible for NHS medical treatment. (This page on the UK Council for student Affairs website also includes information about reciprocal health agreements and for European Economic Area (EEA) nationals.)

If you are eligible to use the NHS, you can receive treatment at the following three places:

You should register with a doctor through your local medical practice as soon as possible after you arrive in Britain and not wait until you are ill. This ensures your healthcare needs can be easily catered for during your time in Nottingham.

If your doctor recommends medication, they will write a prescription for you, which you will need to take to a chemist or pharmacy who will give you the medication. The current cost for each item on the prescription is £7.40 (as at February 2012).

Full information about the University Health Centres and the services you are entitled to with them can be found on the Student Support Services webpages

You can also find a useful list of health contacts on the UK Council for International Student Affairs website.
