Local students
Although you may be familiar with the city and all it has to offer, we appreciate that you may find starting university life a little daunting. That's why we have put together the following tips to help you feel at home.
How can I settle into University life and make new friends?
- Get to know other students via our online message boards over the summer.
- Take the plunge. Ensure that you get involved in the Welcome Week activities that are designed to help you settle in and make new friends.
- Join one of the 80 sports and non-sports societies available to you, including everything from Thai boxing to ultimate frisbee and drama to alternative music.
- Do it your way! There will be a range of evening activities provided for all new students. Find out about late trains and night buses.
- Undertake part-time or vacation work to make new friends and fund your course. The JobShop can help you find work at the Students' Union, the University and across Nottingham.
- Find out about opportunities to work in local schools with the Students in Classrooms scheme.
- Investigate opportunities to volunteer in the community or discuss your own volunteering aspirations with the volunteering team.
- Get involved with Fly FM or Platform, the University's student radio station and newspaper. Both are great for your confidence, communication skills and CV.
- Undertake a musical activity. NTU has several ensembles which rehearse and perform together regularly, whether it is with the NTU Choir, the NTU Concert Orchestra, music tuition or joining a music society. NTU also offers choral scholarships to talented singers at the University.
- Help other students to find their way around Nottingham. Remember you have lots to offer, as you probably know where the banks, shops, night clubs are located and can help new students get around.
Finally, just give it a little time. As you progress into the first term, you will meet new friends through your course and hobbies. You will also find other students living locally with whom you can share your experiences.
