Mature students
As a mature student, you are already likely to have a wide range of skills invaluable when seeking to adapt to university life. For example, you will be experienced in managing your own time and working on multiple issues at once. It is well worth remembering that your maturity is an asset. You will also have the Mature Student Support Service on-hand, should you need any advice or support.
Don't worry about the age gap
There are many different ways in which you can forge friendships with your peers, irrespective of the potential age gap. In addition to the 80 sports and non-sports societies you can join and Welcome Week events available, you can do the following as a mature student:
- Use the message boards over the summer and during Welcome Week to make contact with other mature students.
- Register for the introductory meetings for new mature undergraduate students, which will be held the week before Welcome Week at all three University campuses.
- Take the plunge. Ensure that you get involved in appropriate Welcome Week activities that are designed to help you settle in.
- Go to the designated meeting points during Welcome Week for an opportunity to meet other new mature students as well as second-year students from these groups and mature student fresher reps. The Welcome Week Guide will be posted out to you early in September, which will confirm where those meeting points are.
- Investigate opportunities to volunteer in the community or discuss your own volunteering aspirations with the volunteering team.
Timetabling
If you have childcare or other caring commitments, we appreciate that you will want to know as soon as possible when you will be expected to study. Your school office will try and send as much information as possible out in advance, but might not be able to confirm your final timetable until all students on your course have made their module choices during Welcome Week. If you are concerned about this issue contact your NTU School office in the couple of weeks leading up to Welcome Week and explain the situation to see if they can offer at least some basic information to assist you.
Enjoy your time at NTU and take advantage of all the support, societies and pursuits available to you.
