IT essentials

We recommend that you spend some time familiarising yourself with the University PCs and the academic network that you will be expected to use regularly for the next few years. It's also worth noting that you will find some software tutorials within Nottingham Trent University Online Workspace (NOW) and that Libraries and Learning Resources (LLR) run a programme of free IT literacy online tutorials. Further help can be obtained from the help desks in the libraries and IT resource rooms.

Getting started
To use any of the student PCs, you must first have obtained your NTU ID and password. Keep your password in a safe place and do not reveal it to anyone. Please note, students and staff who use the University's IT resources are bound by the Computer Use Regulations. For more details about NTU computer usage, please visit the LLR page on getting started

Once you have your student ID and have enrolled you can use our student portal. Your portal is a one-stop-shop providing easy access to all your NTU information in just one click. Within the portal you will be able to see your NTU email, timetables, lecture notes, news and much more. Your portal will automatically appear if you log onto any NTU computer, but you will also be able to get it off-campus by going to the address https://portal.ntu.ac.uk and adding ADS\ to the front of your NTU student number.

IT facilities
In addition to the IT facilities provided by your School, LLR provides open access facilities in libraries and IT resource rooms across the three campuses. Some of these are open 24 hours per day. If you would like to use the University IT facilities, simply select the campus you are visiting and see how many PCs are available.

Using email
Your email address is in the format firstname.surname2011@my.ntu.ac.uk (for example joe.bloggs2011@my.ntu.ac.uk), which you can use even after you graduate. You can access your University email account from anywhere with Internet access. You can also view it directly in your Student Portal and also NOW. If logged onto a PC on campus, you can access your email via the Microsoft Outlook icon located under the Start button. You can use the Address Book to look up names and email addresses of NTU students and staff. For external email you will need to type the full address (e.g. someone@somewhere.co.uk).

Printing and photocopying
You are given a free printing and photocopying allowance of £6.30 at the beginning of each academic year. You can use this to pay for printing and photocopying. Once it is used up, you will need to pay for more credit yourself. You can do this using your Smartcard and the credit machines located in the libraries and open access IT resource rooms. Find out more about our printing and photocopying facilities.

For more information about logging in and out of University PCs, saving work and the NTU email system, please go to the Library and Learning Resources and Current Students' websites.
