Access to Learning Fund

The Access to Learning fund (ALF) is a limited amount of money allocated to NTU by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to assist home students with additional financial needs.

Your eligibility will be checked against criteria which are set nationally. A standard assessment procedure will calculate your level of financial support based on the gap between your annual income and essential expenditure.

You may be eligible for assistance if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are studying for at least 50% of an equivalent full-time programme (25% if you are disabled or started your course after 1 September 2012).
  • You are a home student. Residency requirements, such as being settled in the UK and having been ordinarily resident in the UK, define whether you are a home student. (For full-time undergraduate students this means that you satisfy the residence conditions to qualify for a maintenance loan from your national Student Finance Service.)
  • You have applied for the maximum Maintenance Loan to which you are entitled during the year in which you are applying to the fund.

You are more likely to be eligible if:

  • You have exceptionally high course-related expenditure.
  • You are a disabled student.

You can use this fund to supplement your main source of funding. It cannot be relied upon as a sole or main source of financial support and not intended to support your tuition fees. (Some part-time undergraduates whose tuition fees are in excess of the maximum fee grant available may be the exception to this rule.)

The application deadline is 17 May 2013 during the 2012 / 13 academic year. Collect an application form from:

  • the Student Services Centre in Newton and Arkwright
  • Clifton Student Services Centre
  • the Bramley Building, Brackenhurst.
