Other hardship funds

In addition to the Access to Learning Fund, the University's Student Financial Support Service administers a number of other hardship funds for students.

1. Summer Vacation Fund

This is for students unable to work during the summer due to:

  • illness or disability
  • caring responsibilities or dependant children
  • working on an unpaid placement that is an integral part of a student's course
  • first re-sits due to difficulties, or ill health, experienced during the academic year.

We cannot assist students who are unable to get a summer job due to the current economic climate. This is because the funds are limited.

2. Student finance delays

You may qualify for limited funding from the Access to Learning Fund if you:

  • have submitted an application and all the necessary documentation to your national Student Finance Service
  • are actively chasing the student funding service to secure your funds
  • have exhausted all other possible sources of funding (including overdraft facilities).

This funding will cover your basic food and travel needs. You will need to make an appointment with one of our advisers to check the reason and likely length of the delay. Our advisers will assess your needs during the period until your funding arrives.

3. Additional Fee Support Scheme

For those who started their course at NTU before 1 September 2012, additional fee support is available for low-income part-time students whose statutory fee support is insufficient to meet the full tuition fee. You must be studying at least 50% of a full-time course or 25% for disabled students to qualify.

You must also have been assessed for a Fee Grant from your Local Authority or National Student Finance Service before an application can be submitted.

What are the funding amounts?

  • If you are in receipt of a full Fee Grant (£820, £985 or £1,230) your remaining fees will be met in full up to a maximum of £800.
  • If you are in receipt of a partial fee grant 75% of your remaining fees will be paid up to a maximum of £600.
  • If you are not in receipt of a Fee Grant you will not be eligible for the scheme.

Closing date for applications 17 May 2013.

Find out more about the funding available to part-time students.

NB: Funding for part-time students joining NTU after 1 September 2012 is changing and a tuition fee loan will be available to cover full fees. Details can be found on our Part-time Funding pages.

4. Further Education (FE) Hardship Funds

The University is usually allocated limited funding each year to assist further education students with travel and other course-related expenses (including childcare for those aged 20 and over and accommodation costs for those aged 19 and over who have relocated in order to study). These funds are allocated during the Autumn Term and further information and details of how to apply are available on our FE student funding page.

Email us if you need further information on the funding available or find out more about FE student funding.
