Faith and spirituality
University can be a time when you can start to question who you are, to think about what you believe, what is important to you, and what you stand for – and against. Sometimes you will come with already fixed ideas, which your time here will shatter or confirm. Sometimes you won't have really thought about what you believe in before, but find yourself prompted to do so by your studies, those you meet, or events that occur.
These questions are at the heart of wellbeing. They are also at the heart of religious faith and spiritual values and health. Here at NTU we recognise the importance of spiritual support and nurture as much as social and academic support. A team of chaplains and advisers from a variety of faiths is therefore available to all students at Nottingham Trent University, whether you have faith or not. They are here to help you think about your spirituality.
Our chaplains play a number of roles:
- supporting and advising students
- providing opportunities to foster a sense of community and well-being
- helping those who want to explore the big questions through social and spiritual events
- highlighting the importance of spiritual wellbeing.
To find out more about the range of activities offered by the team and events at our new Well-being Centre, The Place ... for Spirituality and Well-being, at the Student Centre in the George Eliot Building at the Clifton Site, pop in to see in the Well-being Centre, call us on 0115 848 3279 or email us. We look forward to seeing you soon.
There are opportunities for Christian and Hindu worship and prayer rooms for Muslim students and staff on both the City site and at Clifton campus. There is also a quiet space at Clifton campus, which can be used for prayer or quiet reflection.
If you are a practicing member of a faith community, and want to meet other students who share your faith, you may be interested in the faith and cultural societies run through the Students' Union:
- Adventist Students
- Asian Cultural
- Chinese Christian Fellowship
- Christian Union City
- Christian Union Clifton
- Hindu
- Islamic
- Jewish
- Leadership
- International Student Society
- Sikh.
You can also visit our centre at Clifton campus, where a chaplain is usually available. There is also a library of books on spiritual issues and health, as well as a space for you to just be, relax and have a drink and some food with others.
What if I'm not happy with the service?
Please talk to the Co-ordinating Chaplain for Faith Support first. If you would then like to make a formal complaint, please write to the Wellbeing Manager at the Student Services Centre at the City site.
