Is higher education for me?

We want to encourage more people with mental health difficulties to consider higher education as an option for their future.

What is the Well aHead project?

The Well aHead project exists to advise and support people with mental health difficulties who are thinking about studying at NTU and help you to prepare for university life.

Whatever your questions or concerns about university life, the Well aHead Officer is there to help you out, point you in the right direction for support, and work with you to resolve any issues and plan ahead.

Get Well aHead
Your journey to university starts from the moment you look at our prospectus and begin to ask yourself whether this might be for you. We can offer a range of support to make that journey a bit smoother for you. For example:

  • We can arrange an informal visit to meet with the Well aHead Officer, take a look around, get used to the different environment and maybe even meet a tutor if you think that would be helpful.
  • We can talk to you about how to apply to NTU.
  • We can talk in confidence about your individual circumstances and any concerns you might have about applying to NTU or studying here.
  • We can meet you on your own or with a support worker, friend or relative.

What will happen if I tell you that I have mental health difficulties?
NTU will not discriminate against you on the grounds that you have a mental health difficulty.

If you tell us about your difficulties we would wish to consider whether there are any adjustments we could make to make university life a bit easier for you so that you can just get on with being a student and enjoying all the opportunities which student life has to offer.

How the Disabled Students' Allowance can help
You are entitled to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) if you have mental health difficulties. This can provide funding for a wide range of resources, support and equipment which will assist you to study effectively.

Some of these things may not be obvious. For example if the thing which would stop you studying at university is that you can't use the bus it can cover the cost of taxis to and from NTU.

It would be a good idea to talk to us about how to apply, and how the DSA could work for you.

Are there other students with mental health difficulties?
People with mental health difficulties can often feel isolated or different, but the truth is that, as in all walks of life, there are a great number of students who have mental health difficulties, and with every kind of diagnosis.
