You can do the following to get involved and settle into the NTU student experience. Try something new and add skills to your CV.

Learn a language

Learn a new language or improve the skills you learnt at school. You can make your language study count towards your degree, or do it separately. We offer:

  • French
  • German
  • Italian and Spanish from beginner to advanced levels
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Dutch
  • Russian
  • Arabic
  • English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for beginners.

Get a part-time job

If you're looking for part-time or vacation work, you can pop into Jobshop.

Gain employable skills

The Students' Union Student Training and Development service (STRIDE) delivers workshops on:

  • teamwork
  • problem solving
  • communication
  • personal development.

Volunteering

Volunteering offers many benefits and is a great way to meet new people and have fun! You can learn many new skills such as leadership, problem solving and teamwork. You will also get the satisfaction of knowing that you have done something really worthwhile in your local community during your time at University! There are lots of exciting volunteering opportunities available to all NTU students through the Initi8 project - whether you are looking to volunteer in a local project, just for one day or even set up your own project.

Get involved in local community activities. Initi8 offers:

  • one-day challenges
  • career related experience
  • student led projects.

Students in classrooms

The Students in Classrooms scheme offers opportunities for work in local schools, to help pupils achieve more. Help teachers and encourage children in local schools to think about going to university to achieve more.

Want to be a journalist or presenter?

Get involved with Fly FM or Platform, the University's student radio station and newspaper. Enhance your confidence, communication skills and CV.

Join a sports club or society

Join one of the Student Unions' sports clubs and 60 non-sports societies. From Fashion to Finance, Conservation to Rock, there is a society for you. You can even train for a qualification in sports coaching.

Enjoy music

Take part in a musical activity:

  • join the NTU choir or NTU Concert Orchestra
  • gain music tuition
  • join a music society.
