Dr Sharples is a lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Leicester, and author of, among other publications, a recent book on West Germans and the Nazi Legacy (Routledge, 2012). This paper will explore controversies over arrangements for the burial of Nazi war criminals, reflecting on the issues raised by the complex problem of 'what to do with a dead Nazi'. It will examine what these episodes tell us about politics and society in post-war Germany, and the nature of historical memory.
