Abstract

We examine the evidence to support the hypothesis that inequalities in pay, as captured by the CEO pay slice, CPS, metric undermine company performance in a model where corporate performance also reflects board size. We allow board size and within board executive pay inequality to jointly determine corporate performance and ask which factor predominates as a factor determining corporate performance as measured by shareholder returns. We examine the performance of UK companies in the years 1999-2012 using such a model which conditions the impact of within board pay inequality on the size of the company's board.
