Networking | Public lectures

Space and the atmosphere of planets and moons are harsh environments that make live difficult for space probes and satellites. Dr M Crowley (NTU) will talk about how ESA develops materials for their missions.

  • From: Wednesday 21 May 2014, 4 pm
  • To: Wednesday 21 May 2014, 8 pm

Event details

Satellites and space probes have to withstand the bombardment from space junk and survive the extreme temperatures of space. These are only a few challenges for the materials they are made from. The European Space Agency (ESA) has developed a special metallurgy project exploring the properties of materials used in space for their missions.

The event will start at 4 pm at the NTU observatory where we will observe the Sun. This will be followed at 5 pm in CELS with Dr M Crowley's (NTU) talk A Case for Space - Materials in Space. He will introduce us to the ESA metallurgy project, the properties of materials needed in space and how we find these materials. This talk will be followed by a brief introduction on what is visible in this month's sky.

Booking is required for this event.

Programme

The event will start at 4 pm at the NTU observatory, where visitors will get a tour of the observatory and the chance to observe the Sun with the observatory's telescopes, small telescopes if the weather allows it. Afterwards, at 5pm this will be followed by the talk A Case for Space - Materials in Space in CELS.

If the weather is not good, a small planetarium session will be offered in the observatory pointing out objects of interest.
