Teaching A-level Special Relativity using Space-time Diagrams

At A-level, Einstein's fascinating and counter-intuitive ideas of time dilation, length contraction and E=mc2 are usually taught with the algebraic equations.

In this training event we will show how these ideas can be presented graphically using space-time diagrams. The graphical approach helps to avoid some of the difficulties of the algebra, as well as providing nice insights into time dilation and the notion of simultaneous events. Although not how Einstein initially described special relativity, space-time diagrams and the graphical approach are also essential to understand general relativity and curved space-time.
