Event details

Comets are dirty snowballs and the remains of our early solar system billions of years old. They have conserved the materials our solar system was made from. Trying to understand how comets change when they become heated by the Sun and analysing the material they are made out of will help us understand where we come from.

At 8 pm Dr D Brown (NTU) will tell us about the amazing european Rosetta Mission in his talk Landing on a Comet - The Rosetta Mission. During his talk we will learn more about what comets are and how the Rosetta Mission attempts to land on something that is as loosely packed as a snowball. This talk will be followed by a brief introduction on what is visible in this month's sky.

Booking is required for this event.

Programme

The event will start at 8 pm with the talk Landing on a Comet - The Rosetta Mission in CELS. Refreshments will be offered before hand in the CELS foyer. Afterwards, visitors will get a tour of the NTU observatory and the chance to see interesting objects in the autumn sky with the observatory's telescopes, small telescopes, and binoculars if the weather allows it.

If the weather is not good, a small planetarium session will be offered in the observatory pointing out objects of interest.
