The Division of Psychology in the School of Social Sciences holds a regular weekly seminar series over the academic year to invite excellent internal and external speakers to present their research findings. This is an integral part of our research culture in the Division which stimulates psychological thinking and debate, and informs about current developments in the various subfields of Psychology.

Staff and students from Psychology and the wider University are welcome to attend.

Psychosocial experiences and psychosis

The experience of Psychosis is most often referred to within a medical context, with the assumption that symptoms are manifestations of a disease which is caused by a genetic predisposition or biochemical imbalance. Research within a psychosocial framework has however reported strong (potentially causal) relationships between a number of life experiences and the development of psychosis symptoms (auditory and visual hallucinations, paranoia, and delusions). Much of this research has examined experiences of psychological trauma, with the main focus on abuse in childhood.

In this seminar, a number of studies examining this relationship will be presented, to include the cumulative effect of multiple traumas, how trauma is distributed in the population, and how this can be explained in terms of psychotic experiences, as well the potential effects of cannabis use and the interaction between these experiences. In addition, some preliminary findings regarding the relationship between psychosis and social defeat (discouraged, hopelessness, worthlessness, suicidal thoughts) will be discussed.
