Peter Hennessy was a journalist for over 20 years. He worked for a variety of publications during the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1992, he moved from journalism to academia at Queen Mary University of London, and was subsequently appointed as Attlee Professor of Contemporary History in 2001.

In 2010, he was elevated to the House of Lords where he sits as a crossbench peer.

Lecture synopsis: For over forty years, Peter Hennessy has been writing the history of his own times - first as a journalist, and later as an author and academic. In this lecture, he reflected upon his career and considered the challenges and opportunities inherent in historicising the era in which the historian lives.
