Research Discussion: with Dr Natalie Martin
"The Legacy of Leveson: Is the UK a liberal democracy?"

This session will:

  • Consider the freedom and plurality of the news media in the UK, which is often seen as a key indicator of how liberal "democracies" are. The extent to which journalists are free from the influence of the state and media owners in what they write – and who they scrutinise – is part of what makes a democracy "liberal".
  • Ask how much the UK national news media is actually constrained by outside influences in the post Leveson era.
  • Question just how "liberal" the UK's democracy really is.

What you need to check before attending the event:

  • Are you studying Psychology with Sociology and/or a Criminology module as part of BA Health and Social Care course? If so, you will need to check your module learning rooms to see if your lectures are still taking place.
  • Are you studying on the BA (Hons) Criminology; BA (Hons) Social Work, BSc (Hons) Psychology; BSc (Hons) Psychology with Sociology; or BSc (Hons) Psychology with Criminology? You will still have scheduled teaching, seminars or you will be on placement. You are very welcome to attend our ACE Week events that do not clash with your scheduled teaching.
