Event details

The Division of Psychology in the School of Social Sciences holds a regular weekly seminar series over the academic year to invite excellent internal and external speakers to present their research findings. This is an integral part of our research culture in the Division which stimulates psychological thinking and debate, and informs about current developments in the various subfields of Psychology.

Please be aware that the content for this seminar has changed from what was previously listed.

This week's seminar will be from Karen Slade on Suicide, Self-harm and Violence in our Prisons: Shining Lights and Dark Alleys.

The seminar will explore a number of questions which provide answers to support strategies to effectively prevent suicide and self-harm. The seminar will focus on prison suicide, self-harm and assaults but is applicable to a wide range of settings. Dr Slade will discuss her research which aims to explore questions like: how can you identify someone who is at risk of suicide or self-harm? What psychological processes are at play? What does a suicide prevention intervention actually look like? Violence and self-harm - what’s the link? And critically: what can we do to keep people safe in our prisons?

Dr Slade will discuss her research but will also encourage you to apply psychological theory to practice in this interactive seminar – so come prepared with a pen.
