Presenting scientific information orally and visually

Speaking about a project differs a lot from writing about a project. In a piece of writing, the pace and revision are under the reader's control and a great deal of the delivery is textual. In a presentation, the audience is much more in the hands of the presenter, and the presenter therefore has a responsibility to engage and even to entertain. A good presentation doesn't necessarily tell all of the data (that's what the written paper is for!), so much as it tells an interesting story about the data and piques the interest of prospective readers.

We'll discuss how to structure a presentation appropriately for a particular audience, the appropriate format and timing, how to match the complexity and dimensionality of visual displays to that of the data that are being displayed and how to use visual displays both to direct the attention of the audience and to cue the presenter.
