The Division of Politics and International Relations in the School of Social Sciences holds a regular seminar series over the academic year to invite excellent internal and external speakers to present their research findings.

This is an integral part of our research culture in the division, which stimulates thought and debate, and informs about current developments in the various subfields of Politics and International Relations.

Staff and students from the Division of Politics and International Relations and the wider University are welcome to attend.

This week's seminar is from Dr Christopher Davidson, Reader in Middle East Politics at the University of Durham.

From Arab Spring to Arab Counterrevolution: Islamists, Generals, and the Islamic State
This lecture looks at the counter-revolutionary responses to the 2011 Arab uprisings and tries to account for the success of Islamist parties, the return of military deep states, and the rise of extremists. Along with regional actors, it will consider the interests and roles played by the Western powers and how a number of ‘wild cards’, including the opening up of Iran and the new oil industry dynamics, are now beginning to play out.

Staff and students from the Division of Politics and International Relations and the wider University are welcome to attend.
