The path to better jobs
Boots have always been proud to provide care in thousands of communities across the UK, to give access to employment for all, and to provide training and progression for everyone. However, as customer's expectations of both our retail and employment offer change, we have to respond and adapt. There are exciting opportunities for our industry to innovate against these new societal trends and our challenge is to remain in the vanguard of social mobility, ensuring that while job roles will surely change, there will be better, more engaging jobs in the future.
According to a recent report by the British Retail Consortium, there could be 900,000 fewer retail jobs by 2025. Under the banner of 'Retail 2020', Matthew has been working as part of a cross industry steering group of HR Directors to understand the profound and accelerating structural change driving this, and what it means for people working in the sector, setting out a path to fewer, better jobs.
Matthew is Director of HR Operations for Boots UK and Ireland. He rejoined Boots in March 2015 and leads a team of 250 people delivering HR support and thought leadership across the expertise areas of Reward, Pensions, Employee Relations, Resourcing, Technology, People Insight, Occupational Health and Colleague Technology.
His early career spanned store operations and regional leadership roles with Tesco, Punch Taverns and JD Wetherspoon before a move to specialise in HR from 2001. Prior to his current role at Boots, Matthew’s HR roles have included UK Country Lead for Global Operations at AstraZeneca and HR Director for the Business and Industry sector at Compass Group.
A graduate in Business and Quality Management from Nottingham Trent University, he is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Doctor of Business Administration. He is also an Alumni Fellow of Nottingham Business School.
