Abstract

The way humans walk, also known as human gait, can provide a unique set of characteristics for a wide range of applications, for example, to recognize early onset of a neurodegenerative disease or to construct a biometric system for security clearance.

We propose a simple yet efficient technique based on a convolutional neural network architecture for learning spatio-temporal gait features, end-to-end from raw sensor data obtained by a unique unobtrusive floor sensor system. We introduce a spatio-temporal gait dataset: UoM-Gait-13. This floor sensor dataset of 936 samples, encompasses experiments of 10 manners of walking and 3 cognitive oriented tasks to yield a total of 13 types of gait patterns.

We demonstrate the effective detection of gait patterns. The proposed architecture is computationally efficient, has low number of parameters and is able to achieve a classification F-score performance of 0.967 from a limited set of experimental samples.
