The human musculoskeletal system is an organ system providing the body with the ability to move; the primary players in this system being the skeletal muscles and bones. The generation of force and power from the muscles and the structural framework provided by the skeleton are critical to our ability to be physically active and perform exercise. This can, however, come at the expense of disruptions to the internal environment of these tissues that can lead to positive adaptations to their structure in the longer term or, alternatively, fatigue and the breakdown of these tissues in the shorter term. Professor Sale has spent the last 20 years investigating the impact of exercise and nutrition on health and performance in humans, with a particular focus on the triggers for adaptations in bone and muscle.
This lecture could more accurately be titled a tale of two tissues (muscle and bone), four cities (Portsmouth, Liverpool, Chichester and Nottingham) and as many mentors! Professor Sale will provide an overview of his contributions to work on muscle (focussing on nutritional supplementation of beta-alanine to reduce muscle fatigue during high-intensity exercise) and bone (focussing on the effects of exercise and nutrition on bone metabolism, mass and strength).
