As part of the School of Science and Technology Chemistry and Forensic Science Colloquium, Dr Richard Grainger, University of Sheffield presents: Peri-substituted disulfides and diselenides for the generation and stabilisation of reactive intermediates.
Abstract
The close proximity of functional groups at the 1,8-positions (peri-positions) of naphthalene and related ring systems can give rise to unusual and unique effects, both in terms of structure and reactivity. This seminar will discuss our work in exploiting peri-substituted dichalcogenides (sulfur, selenium) for the generation and stabilization of reactive intermediates. Applications will cover the generation and trapping of the reactive diatomic sulfur monoxide, stabilisation of the vic-disulfoxide and bissulfonylhydroxylamine functionalities, and catalysis by small molecule mimics of the enzymes FeFe hydrogenase and glutathione peroxidase.
This seminar is hosted by Professor John Wallis.
All welcome. For any queries please contact Dr Sophie Benjamin.
