The retail sector is at the forefront of discussion. For 30 years, claims have been made that it is extinct, but it somehow stays alive – even if it is somewhat different in the era of “Amazonisation”.

The most common point of debate is the trade-off or competition between physical and electronic points of sale, with physical stores evolving from selling environments into media and interaction spaces.

Antreas’s presentation addresses 12 issues relevant to the retail agenda. The first six are predictable challenges: pricing, loyalty, delivery, in-store retail, mobile retail, and innovation. The others are more recent, but are inextricably linked to the first six: perspective, customer experience, trust, payments, “webrooming”, and the shopper journey.

From the retailer’s perspective, the dimensions of retail competitiveness are also areas of retail creativity. From an academic’s point of view, many of these issues don’t have definite answers, and therefore fuel alternative points of view with empirical and theoretical implications.
