Event details

The Department of Psychology will be hosting an event on the 27 April to explore the challenges posed by the Research Excellence Framework (REF) for researchers using qualitative and mixed-method research as well as for those assessing their work. In a day of talks and workshops, this event will facilitate discussion on:

  • Writing and evaluating qualitative/mixed-methods research for REF
  • The use of qualitative and mixed-methods to underpin REF impact case studies
  • The suitability of different UoAs for research using different methods

Our keynote speakers include:

Prof Susan Condor (qualitative methods expert and former REF panellist) who will be giving a keynote showcasing qualitative and mixed methods research in Psychology.

Prof Clifford Stott (mixed-methods expert, ESRC Impact Award winner and BPS Social Section Chair) will be giving a second keynote on the use of mixed method psychological research in REF Impact Case Studies.

Dr Sarah Seymour-Smith (BPS Qualitative Methods in Psychology Section) will be talking about her transformative research and impact in the area of masculinities and health.

The overall aim of the event is to produce guidelines for those UK research leaders with responsibility for evaluating potential psychology REF submissions as well as for those conducting and writing-up qualitative or mixed-methods research for future submission.
