Event details

The sky has featured in cultures throughout time. One such example is the solar orientation discovered 50 years ago of the 5,000 year old passage grave New Grange in Ireland. However there are more examples in Ireland that allow us an insight into how ancient societies perceived the sky.

Dr. Frank Prendergast (DIT) is an experienced surveyor and archaeoastronomer of ancient sites especially in Ireland. In his talk Facing the Sun he will describe his experience with the Irish sky heritage unlocked through some of his sites he worked on.

Booking is required for this event. While attending, you consent to filming, photography, and sound recording – which may include you as a member of the audience – and its use in publication or advertising distribution, either printed or online, without payment or copyright.

Programme

The event will start at 8 pm with Dr Frank Prendergast (DIT) talking about Facing the Sun. Refreshments will be offered from 7.45 pm in the CELS foyer. Afterwards, visitors will get a tour of the NTU observatory and the chance to see interesting objects in the autumn sky using the observatory's telescopes, small telescopes and binoculars, if the weather allows it.

If the weather is not good, a small planetarium session will be offered in the observatory pointing out objects of interest.
