Abstract

In recent years the jogger has become a ubiquitous urban figure, with recreational running experiencing a ‘boom’ in the UK. As such running is commonly characterised as an open and democratic form of activity that attracts a relatively high proportion of females as well as proving popular amongst older age groups. And yet, when these individuals lace up their trainers and head outside to exercise, they render themselves open to ‘street harassment’ – to numerous forms of unwanted and intrusive behaviours. In this talk, I shall examine data from women runners reflecting on their experiences of street harassment whilst exercising in public spaces. Using an ethnographic approach and creative nonfiction, I shall present three vignettes to exemplify the embodied nature of running. In this sense, embodiment for women who run is wrapped up in a jumble of meanings, which include having to react against the dominant cultural discourse of women’s running bodies, and skirt the dialectic between safety and danger, empowerment and constraint.
