We have fashionistas, why don’t we have finance-istas?

‘Adventures in Fashion Finance’ gives a unique insight into the business of fashion, the current trading environment and challenges faced in luxury fashion and retail, describing James’ journey with a few lessons learned along the way.

Fashion is about today and tomorrow.  Business is about longevity.  How do brands remain relevant, re-invent their range every season, navigate the massive change in how customers buy – not to mention grow sales, manage overheads, lessen the impact of currency fluctuations, second-guess the impact of Brexit, all whilst remaining calm, smiling and not breaking a sweat?  What is the future of retail with the onslaught of e-commerce?  How do we remain relevant, responsible, viable, fashionable?  In fashion finance, this season’s collection is the profit and loss account, the brand is the balance sheet.

James provides a unique insight into the luxury fashion business from the perspective of the business founded and lead by the iconic Sir Paul Smith.  With practical insights into the changing landscape across its various distribution channels:- own retail and ecommerce, wholesale, franchise and licensing, James will describe the impact of the internet and his viewpoint as to the future role of shops.  He will explain the theory and reality of the luxury brand ‘pyramid’ and support the assertion that there are continuing opportunities arising in an organisation that looks for inspiration in everything.

Biography

James is the Finance Director for Paul Smith where he has worked for over 16 years. He studied at Nottingham Trent University and trained as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young. Post-qualification he joined Boots PLC working initially in the Internal Audit department before moving onto strategic projects including Boots banking and Wellbeing services.  In his spare time, James owned a pub for seven years and admits to coveting the small, but very colourful, Paul Smith car collection!
