As part of the School of Science and Technology Chemistry and Forensic Science Colloquium Professor Nicole Pamme, University of Hull presents: Microfluidics for Chemistry and Life Sciences.

Our research evolves around the study of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip devices, which allow precise handling of liquids at microscopic scales. Our group applies lab-on-a-chip technology for environmental analysis on-site, for clinical diagnostics at the point-of-care and the synthesis of smart materials. The presentation will feature examples from these areas. (1) In the context of environmental analysis we have developed a portable devices for analysis of drinking water in resource-limited settings (Africa) and are working on paper-based microfluidic devices to study pollution of river water with laypersons on-site. (2) In the context of clinical diagnostics we have carried out a range of projects on developing lab-on-a-chip based devices for analysis of pathogens in urine and blood samples as well as food samples. (3) Finally, we are employing droplet microfluidic platforms to generate smart materials for drug delivery through layer-by-layer deposition or microgel polymerisation.
