Abstract

Goals are considered to be an integral part of daily life, particularly in high performance contexts such as sport. Athletes and their coaches regularly engage in goal setting to enhance their performance. Additionally, recommendations for goal setting, such as the SMART principle, are widely known and employed by those engaging in goal pursuit. However, to date there has been a lack of criticality when evaluating the goals literature, particularly in sporting contexts. This fails to acknowledge the complexity of goal setting in practice, with important individual, contextual and environmental factors being overlooked within the applied recommendations. One such factor that has shown to be important is the underpinning motives with which athletes strive for their goals. Within this talk, I will present my research examining the underpinning motives for goals, and demonstrate how these motives relate to goal attainment and other associated outcomes such as well-being and the management of multiple goals. The talk will be of interest to anyone interested in being more effective in their own goal pursuits.

This seminar is hosted by Dr Caroline Sunderland.

All welcome.
